Antares´s tracking route

We tracked this female with calf for nearly 9 months (267 days) during which she traveled 11,319 kilometers (7,033 miles). After leaving Golfo Nuevo, Antares traversed the continental shelf in a southwards direction. Upon reaching the latitude of Puerto Santa Cruz, Antares turned southeast, arriving at the channel which separates the Banco Namuncura-Burdwood from the archipelago of the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands.

From there Antares traveled northwards over the Plateau of the Islas Malvinas (Falkland Islands), explored the deep waters of the ocean basin, then entered the continental shelf area once more north of the Blue Hole. Turning south Antares continued to the southernmost tip of the continent, exploring the Cabo Vírgenes region, then later entering the Strait of Magellan. Contact was lost with Antares in the third week of June 2022, when she was on the east coast of Tierra del Fuego Island in the southern sector of the Bahia de San Sebastian.

The areas in which Antares remained longest during her migratory journey were the Patagonian Sea, in the central part of the shelf south of Golfo San Jorge (between latitudes 47°S and 50°S), and along the northern coast of Tierra del Fuego Island.
