Atenea´s tracking route

  • Atenea and her calf remained inside Golfo Nuevo for 3 days after deployment of her satellite transmitter, exploring the southern coast of Peninsula Valdés. After leaving Golfo Nuevo, this adult female struck out straight south, crossed through the Strait of Le Maire that separates Isla de los Estados from Tierra del Fuego, and navigated westwards around the Cabo de Hornos (Cape Horn). She then turned northwards and began ascending along the Pacific coast of the South American continent. Atenea had a short duration satellite tracking device, which ceased transmissions on November 19, after 25 days. Her recorded trip was 3,100 km (1,926 miles). Atenea was the first whale to join the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, surprising us with a new migration route never before recorded for the right whales from Peninsula Valdés.
