Demeter´s tracking route

  • Demeter and her calf remained a few more days in the area between the continent and the Islas Malvinas (Falkland Islands), at the latitude of the mouth of the Río Santa Cruz (50°S, 64°W), where this female surely encountered a productive patch over the mid-continental shelf. On December 11th, after transmitting for 39 days, her device fell silent. After being tagged, Demeter traveled over 3,000 kilometers (1,864 miles).

  • Demeter was the last whale tagged during the 2023 season. This adult female and her calf traveled clockwise while in Golfo Nuevo, leaving the gulf at the southern tip of the mouth (Punta Ninfas). They began their migration traveling southwards over the mid-section of the continental shelf until they arrived at the latitude of the mouth of the Río Santa Cruz. For the past week they have been between the continent and the Islas Malvinas (Falkland Islands), most likely feeding there.
