Moscovium´s tracking route

  • Days before completing four months of being tracked, Moscovium, a mother with calf, remains over the continental shelf, where she has been since the beginning of November, only 270 kilometers (168 miles) from Golfo Nuevo. She is just 70 kilometers (44 miles) away from Neptunium.

  • In mid-November Moscovium, a female with calf, returned to the shallow waters of the continental shelf. From there she traveled in a southwest direction until she arrived in an area off the coast of Chubut frequently used by whales from Valdés in previous seasons. She is presently close to Neptunium.

  • After leaving Golfo Nuevo, Moscovium traveled southeast for 390 kilometers (242 miles) until she reached the continental slope.  She then changed her direction and traveled north until she reached the latitude of Golfo Nuevo. She has stayed in this area with abundant food.

  • During these last weeks of tracking, Moscovium and her calf traveled around most of the area of Golfo Nuevo, from the mouth of the gulf to the coast close to Puerto Madryn, where the follow-up team sighted her for the last time, on October 29th. Moscovium began her migratory travels on November 2, 45 days after she was tagged.

  • Moscovium and her calf traveled to the western sector of the gulf after being tagged. At first they utilized shallow coastal areas, and then progressed to deeper waters in which both mother and calf have been diving for over 10 minutes, as recorded by the follow-up team.
